Butternut and Fried Haloumi Stack

I had this very interesting meal at an open air restaurant in Hermanus recently. Kebabs on a nifty table top barbecue thingy which I wish I owned, with a butternut stack side dish.

Nevertheless, I had to recreate the butternut and haloumi stack at least, seeing that I am not allowed to do a table barbecue in an apartment…..

I simply cut the butternut in disks and fried it with pumpkin spice in butter.

Lovely Haloumi

The haloumi can be baked but I dusted the cheese with flour and fried it in shallow oil. Do not over fry as you will end up with rubbery cheese.

Stack the lot and top with fresh rocket and drizzle with lemon juice. Lovely with anything or lovely on its own!

My blues!

My blues!

My sister blogged about the Milnerton Market on nowathome and we walked (and talked) the market from top to bottom last weekend. Of course I had to add to my collection(s) by descending on the white and blue table. Very happy with my loot!

I love me a good design

I am very much a vintage market person and collect a hotch-potch of Victorian, Art Nouveau, Art Deco, 50 ‘s and 60’s porcelain, ceramics, silver, glass and whatever is pretty for that matter! I use all of my finds otherwise what is the point?

Every now and then a modern design catches my eye as recently happened when seeing a display and meeting young Aaron Kearney of Aaron Kearney Design. It is just so pretty and the lovely, clever and clean lines of his plates make music to my eyes.

Image He said that the flat rim of the plate was “born” from his frustration of not having a rim on a plate to push that last fork of food against and to get the last morsel from the plate. His design then evolved into a whole collection of these beautiful shapes. I tried and tested and approved!

image The flat rim is perfect to catch the last sauce, the last fork of food or to use as a serving ‘handle” but most of all the design can just sit there and be a pretty plate. High quality stuff and it comes in a variety of colours and sizes. Well done Aaron and I can not wait to see where you take this and what you think of next. image

Views are my own and I purchased the plates for own use (very happy own use at that!).

I’ve hit the mother load again at the market today

WordPress is playing up again. Will try this post now for the last time with photo’s!

I love going to the Milnerton market very early in the morning when the traders are still unpacking. First pickings you see! The best is to go with my friend Ina who is really very knowledgeable about silver, porcelain and all things vintage. Apart from being knowledgeable she still enjoys hunting for pretty things, just because they are pretty and not merely for their value or name. Great fun indeed.

These two ladies below interested in the same piece? I left the table before it became bloody…..

I bought quite a lot of things I needed( read one) and a few(almost all) that I could not leave behind as it would have ripped a hole in my being (that bad yes).
A few of them:
Sugar bowl which I am not using for sugar. Ainsley English porcelain.
Look at the shape of the spoon! Denmark Silver.
The blue ceramic plate is Kendal Late Mayers and I could have bought the whole table full but didn’t, with inhuman self control.

ImageAnd then the pure indulgence of the exquisite Royal Adderley English Porcelain Swans! Salt and Pepper beauties.
I don’t buy for display, I buy for use (as soon as possible clearly… ) and boy do I enjoy them!
This is of course not all I bought, but the rest is a story for another day.
